welcome to the "free speech zone"

Fuel for my dislike of BYU. This is ridiculous-no matter which side of the Cheney fence you are on....I realize this is a little exaggerated (there's really only one big suited man), but the problem still exists. And I realize that BYU is a "private institution" with the right to limit free speech, but the fact that they choose to do it to such a degree with no explanation given-that's what bothers me. I am not a sheep...

stevie bevie is at it agian with his custom onesies...maybe we should capitalize on this creativity...

come on now liz, there was a Question & Answer on campus dont you know? everyone asked how BYU justified having a moral idiot speak at graduation. In reponse we got the following: the 'churches' statement of "we're inviting the position not the man" (so next year we're having Osoma Bin Laden speak), and secondly, we were told to stop using this Dick Cheney issue as an attack on the administration............

while i still think having dick cheney is pretty rough, and i support protesting, letting the world know BYU doesnt equal republican, after having seen behind the scenes of this Ralph Nader/Jack Healey alternative any fire I had for hating on BYU's decision dampened actually. They spend $22,000 on getting those people to speak at the David O' McKay centre last night. Those $22,000 dollars could have gone to a school in Taiwan or something.

nay nay! welcome to the blog. the Q&A is exactly what pissed me off the most about this whole scenario-pres cecil samuelson completely blew off the questions asked by one student (see the YouTube link in my post).

as for the "alternate ceremony"-i agree. that money could have served much better purposes. holding the alternate ceremony did nothing more than the protesting did, so it was a waste, in my opinion.

to me this issue was simply on the free speech level. whether or not cheney should have been invited, and whether or not he is a "good" man, etc., is not my concern. honestly, after watching his commencement speech, it was hard to actually despise the man. he did a pretty good job of playing the humble man. maybe he fooled us, maybe not. either way, his speech was generic and non-controversial and i don't think his presence on campus yielded any negative results except the protests.

seriously. i have issues with cheneys actions and social politic moves as well as his host of global misdemeanors. I dont know why he was invited to speak at all. it's probably the dumbest thing BYU has ever done besides print the Daily Universe as a serious paper.
